expects even this charitable heart in the poor; for all must give to the Lord according to their means: therefore it is mentioned, that Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld poor people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called to him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor woman hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."

I trust these instances will prove to you, my dear child, that there is no injustice with God in that distinction between the poor and the rich. We perceive some rich are poor towards God, and will share the rich man's fate who neglected the poor beggar Lazarus. But the poor widow was rich towards God, and doubtless she was handsomely rewarded, because of her faith and charity; for Christ has said, "Verily I say unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake and the gospel's, but he shall receive an hundred fold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and children, and sisters, and mother, and lands, with

persecutions, and in the world to come life eternal.” But now, my dear child, let us turn to our be loved Lord.

But, my dear Mamma, how are we to reply, when Satan puts these evil thoughts against God into our minds?

. By searching the Scriptures, my love: if my reply is satisfactory, it is all from Scripture, my child. So that our beloved Lord made this reply to Satan, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." "Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee; and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. On which Jesus said, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil took him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve. On which the devil left

him; and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him."" It is in a similar way that Satan tempts all men on earth, my love, by shewing them the things, pleasures, and follies of the world, which are for a moment. How much better is it to set our hearts on God and a world to come, which is for ever, than listen to this vile serpent!

Had Jesus Christ any companions, Mamma?

O yes, my love: "Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers: and he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men; and they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets and he called them; and they immediately left the ship, and their father, and followed him." Did he travel all over the world, Mamma?

He went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease among the people.

And did all people know of him, Mamma ?

"His fame went throughout all Syria. And they brought unto him all sick people, that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which

were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan."

Did he address the multitudes, Mamma?

O yes, my love, in the most eloquent discourse known. He having seated himself on a mount, thus addressed them :-"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his

savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thence forth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world: a city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,~ and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the pro- : phets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the. kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great inthe kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill: and, Whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever {
