Give us help from trouble, for vain is the help of man.-Ps. lx. 11.

Fear God. Pet. ii. 17. Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come. Rev. xiv. 7.

Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty, &c. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy.→ Rev. xv. 3, 4.

SECT. IX. To trust in God, and in none else, in all cases: the Arguments thereto.

I. Not in any else.

THE Babel builders trusted to a city and tower for their security, but God scattered them.-Gen. xi. 4, &c. There is none besides thee, neither is there any rock like our God, 1 Sam. ii. 2.

Because thou hast relied on the king of Assyria, and not relied on the Lord thy God; therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thy hands, &c. Asa in his disease sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. 2 Chron. xvi. 7. 12.

I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause.Job v. 8.

There is no king saved by the mul, titude of an host. A mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety; neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.-Ps. xxxiii. 16, 17. Isa. xxxi. 1. 3. Job xv. 31. Ps..xx. 7. I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. Thou hast

saved.-Ps. xliv. 6, 7.

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches: none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, &c. that he should live for ever.-Ps. xlix. 6, 7. 9. Ezek. vii. 19.

Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, &c. But I trust in the mercy of God for ever.Ps. lii. 7, 8.

Surely, men of low degree are val nity, and men of high degree a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. Trust not in oppression, &c.-Ps. lxii. 9, 10.

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom is no help; his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.-Ps.cxlvi. 3,4. cxviii. 8, 9.

He that trusteth in his riches, shall fall.-Prov. xi. 28.

He that trusteth in his own heart, is a fool.-Prov. xxviii. 26.

Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?—Isa. ii. 22.

What will ye do in the day of visitation, &c. to whom will ye flee for help? &c.-Isa. x. 3. xx. 6.

Thou didst look in that day unto the armour of the house of the forest, &c. ye made also a ditch between the two walls, &c. But ye have not looked unto the maker thereof.-Isa, xxii, 8—11.

Woe unto the rebellious children, &c. that take counsel, but not of me ; &c. that walk to go down to Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt. Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion, &c. For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose, &c. Their strength is to sit still, &c. No, we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee, &c.-Isa. xxx. 1—3. 5. 7.15-17. i. 28, &c.

Woe to them that go down to Egypt, &c. stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many, &c.-Isa. xxxi. 1.3.

Thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me: thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else besides me. Stand now with thine enchantments,

&c. let them stand up and save thee, &c. Behold they shall be as stubble, &c. None shall save thee.-Isa. xlvii.

10. 12-15.

Let thy companies deliver thee: but the wind shall carry them all away: vanity shall take them.-Isa. lvii. 13. Truly, in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains, &c.-Jer. iii. 23. Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, &c.Jer. vii. 4.

Trust ye not in any brother, for every brother will utterly supplant. -Jer. ix. 4, 5.

This is thy portion, &c. because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood: therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, &c.Jer. xiii. 25, 26.

Thus saith the Lord, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord; for he shall be like the heath in the desert, &c.Jer. xvii. 5, 6.

For because thou hast trusted in thy works, and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken, &c.-Jer. xlviii. 7. Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, &c. O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me? Behold I will bring fear upon thee, saith the Lord of hosts.-Jer. xlix. 4, 5.

As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help; in our watching, we have watched for a nation that could not save us.-Lam. iv. 17.

Egypt shall know, &c. because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. When they took hold of thee by the hand, thou didst break and rend all their shoulder : and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest all their loins, &c.-Ezek. xxix. 6, 7. Isa. xx. 5, 6.

They shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set a fire in Egypt; and when all her helpers shall be destroyed. Ezek. xxx. 8.

Ephraim also is like a silly dove

without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria; when they shall go, I will spread my net upon them, I will bring them down, &c. Woe unto them, for they have fled from me. Hosea vii. 11-13. Jer. ii. 36,37. Ephraim feedeth upon wind, &c. they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, &c.-Hosea xii. 1.

Woe to them that are at ease (or secure) in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria.-Amos vi. 1.

Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide; keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son dishonoureth the father, &c.—Micah vii. 5, 6.

Charge them that are rich, &c. that they trust not in uncertain riches, &c. -I Tim. vi. 17.

We had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves.—2 Cor. i. 9.

II. In God alone. GOD said, Let there be light, and there was light, &c.-Gen. i. 3. 6. 9, &c.

When Sarah doubted of the promise, because of her age, The Lord said to Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the Lord ?—Gen. xviii. 12-14. Luke i. 37.

When Hagar saw Ishmael fainting, and thought there was no way but death with her child, God shewed her a well of water, &c.—Gen. xxi. 15-19.

When Joseph's brethren had conspired to kill him, God works his deliverance.-Gen. xxxvii. 17, &c.

When God was sending Moses upon a great work, Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, &c. but I am slow of speech, &c. And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or the deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, &c,-Exod. iv. 10-12.

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not; stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day, &c. the Lord shall fight for you, &c. And the angel of God, which went before the camp, removed, and went behind them, between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel, &c. Led them through the Red Sea.-Exod. xiv. 13, 14. 19-22.

The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.-Exod. xv. 18.

The Lord, &c. proclaimed the name of the Lord: the Lord, the Lord God; merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; keeping mercy for thousands; forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, &c.-Exod. xxxiv. 5—7,

And Moses said, The people, amongst whom I am, are six hundred thousand, &c. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them? And the Lord said unto Moses, Is the Lord's hand waxed short? Thou shalt see, &c.-Nunb. xi. 21-23.

God is not a man, that he should lie neither the son of man, that he should repent. Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken; and shall he not make it good? Behold, &c. he hath blessed, and I cannot reverse it.-Numb. xxiii. 19, 20. Titus i. 2. Heb. vi. 18.

What God is there in heaven or in earth that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might? -Deut. iii. 24.

Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God: there is none else besides him, &c.-Deut. iv. 35. 39.

Know therefore, that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God; which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him, &c.-Deut. vii. 9.

Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth before thee as a consuming fire, he

shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face so shalt thou drive them out, &c.-Deut. ix. 3, xxxi. 6.

There shall be no man able to stand before you, for the Lord your_God shall lay the fear of you, &c.-Deut. xi. 25. Josh. v. 1. 2 Chron. xiv. 14. xvii. 10.

Their rock is not as our rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. See now, that I, even I am he; and there is no god with me: I kill, and make alive; I wound, and heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand; for I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.— Deut. xxxii. 31. 39, 40.

There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven for thy help, and in his excellency on the sky: the eternal God, thy refuge; and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee, &c.— Deut. xxxiii. 26, 27.

Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, &c.—Josh. iii. 10.

Not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof, &c.-Josh. xxiii. 14. xxi. 4. 1 Kings viii. 56.

There is none beside thee; neither is there any rock like our God, &c. The Lord killeth, and maketh alive; he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up; the Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich; he bringeth low, and lifteth up: he raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them. -1 Sam. ii. 2. 6-8. Luke i. 51–53.

It may be the Lord will work for for there is no restraint to the Lord, to save by many or by few.-1 Sam. xiv. 6. 2 Chron. xiv. 11.

Then said David to the Philistine,

Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, &c. I will smite thee, &c. that all the earth may know there is a God in Israel.-1 Sam. xvii. 45-47. And David was greatly distressed, for the people spake of stoning him, &c. But David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.-1 Sam. xxx. 6. The Lord is my rock, &c. the God of my rock; in him will I trust, &c. He is a buckler to all them that trust in him for who is God, save the Lord and who is a rock, save our God?-2 Sam. xxii. 3. 31, 32.

Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not, for they with us are more than they with them. And Elisha prayed, &c.2 Kings vi. 15-17.

The children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the Lord God of their fathers.-2 Chron.xiii. 18. xvi. 7. xx. 20. xiv. 11.

Hezekiah said unto the people (when the king of Assyria came against him), Be strong and courageous; be not afraid or dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him: with him, an arm of flesh; but with us, the Lord our God, to help us, and to fight our battles.-2 Chron. xxxii. 6-8. Deut. xxxi. 6. 8.

The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, that he made a proclamation for the building of Jerusalem, the temple, and restoring the vessels of the house of the Lord, when the Jews were in captivity.-Ezra i. 1-4. 7. 11. I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause.Job v. 8.

Canst thou by searching find out God? &c. If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him (or turn him away) ?— Job xi. 7. 10.

Though he slay me, yet will I trust. in him. Job xiii. 15.

Job reckons up many works of God; and concludes thus: Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him!-Job xxvi. 14.

I know that thou canst do every thing; and that no thought can be withholden from thee (or no thought of thine can be hindered).-Job xlii. 2. Kiss the Son, &c. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 12.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for thou Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.-Ps. iv. 8. iii. 5, 6.

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble: and they that know thy name, will put their trust in thee; for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.-Ps. ix. 9, 10.

In the Lord put I my trust how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird? &c.-Ps. xi. 1. xxxi. 1. 6.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, &c. in whom I will trust, &c. -Ps. xviii. 2.31. xci. 2.

In the name of our God we will set up our banners, &c. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.-Ps. xx. 5. 7.

The king trusteth in the Lord': and through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.-Ps. xxi. 7.

Our fathers trusted in thee; they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. They trusted in thee, and were not confounded.-Ps. xxii. 4, 5.1 Chron.' v. 20.

Who is this King of glory The Lord, strong and mighty the Lord, mighty in battle. The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.-Ps. xxiv. 8. 10.

The Lord is my strength, and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.-Ps. xxviii. 7. iii. 3.

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be ashamed, &c. O, how great is thy goodness, &c. which thou hast wrought for them that trust in

thee! &c, Thou shalt hide them, &c. derness? &c. A fire was kindled Ps. xxxi. 1. 19, 20. 24.

He that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.-Ps. xxxii.10. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought, &c. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever.Ps. xxxiii. 10,11. Prov. xix. 21. Isa. xlvi. 10.

Trust in the Lord, and do good: so shalt thou dwell in the land, &c. Commit thy way unto the Lord: trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass, &c. The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble; and the Lord shall help them, &c. He shall deliver them, &c. because they trust in him.-Ps. xxxvii. 3. 5. 39, 40.

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust.-Ps. xl.4. lxxxiv. 12, He maketh wars to cease, &c. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted, &c. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.-Ps. xlvi. 9—11.

I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.-Ps. lii. 8.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.-Ps. Iv. 22.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.-Ps. lvi. 3, 4. 11.

For my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpassed.-Ps. lvii. 1. lxi. 3, 4. Through God we shall do valiantly, for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.-Ps. lx. 12.

In God is my salvation, and my glory: the rock of my strength: my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, ye people, &c. God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. Ps. Ixii. 7, 8. 11, 12. lxi. 2.

The God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. -Ps. lxviii. 35.

They spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wil

against Jacob, &c. because they be lieved not in God, and trusted not in his salvation: though he had commanded the clouds, &c.-Ps. lxxviii. 19.21-23. cvi. 24-26.

The Lord reigneth, the Lord is clothed with majesty, the Lord is clothed with strength, &c.-Ps.xciii. 1. xcvii. 1. cxlvi. 10. Rev. xix. 6.

The righteous, &c. he shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.-Ps. cxii. 6, 7.

It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in princes.-Ps. cxviii. 8,9.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth, &c. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.-Ps. cxxi. 2-4.

They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, &c. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people; from henceforth, even for ever.-Ps. cxxv. 1,2.

The Lord is great: and our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased did he in heaven and in earth.-Ps. cxxxv. 5, 6.

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God; which made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever.-Ps. cxlvi. 5, 6.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds: he telleth the number of the stars. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite, &c.-Ps. cxlvii. 3, &c.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to thine own understanding: in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Prov. iii. 5, 6.

Commit thy works unto the Lord,
