Jesus said unto Peter, Blessed art thou, Simon, &c.-Matt. xvi. 17.
Jesus said unto Peter, O thou of little faith! wherefore didst thou doubt?-Matt. xiv. 51. viii. 24-26.
When Jesus spake of his being killed, Peter said, Be it far from thee, Lord; this shall not be unto thee: but he turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan; thou art an offence unto me; for thou savour est not the things that be of God, but those that be of men, &c. Thou wast with Jesus, &c. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest, &c. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. Then began he to curse and swear, I know. not the man, &c. Matt. xvi. 21-23. xxvi. 69, 70. 72.74.
When the disciples could not cure the poor man's son, he came to Jesus; Jesus said of his disciples, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I suffer you?Matt. xvii. 15, 16.
When Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed for before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing them which were of the cir cumcision. And the other Jews dis sembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. --- Gal. ii.

The wise virgins, as well as the foolish, while the bridegroom tarried, all slumbered and slept.-Matt. xxv. 5.

Christ rebuked his disciples for their great fear in the storm.-Mark iv. 37–41. ix. 6.
Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbad him, because he followed not with us. And Jesus said, Forbid him not, &c. James and John would have had fire come down from heaven upon the Samaritans; Jesus rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of, &c. Thomas said, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, &c. I will not believe, &c.-Luke ix. 49, 50. 54, 55. John xx. 25.

The church praying for Peter did not believe his deliverance: for when he knocked at the door, and the dam→ sel had acknowledged she heard his voice, they believed not.-Acts xii. 5. 12-16.
Paul did what he hated, &c. and said, O wretched man that I am, &c. —Rom. vii. 14, 15. 18, 19. 24.
Many saints being compelled, did blaspheme.-Acts xxvi. 10, 11.
I brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able; for ye are yet carnal. There is among you envying and strife, and divisions (or factions). Are ye not carnal, and walk as men? &c. They were very disorderly in the Lord's supper. 1 Cor. iii. 1-3. xi.
Ye are dull of hearing; for when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk.-Heb. v. 11, 12.
Thou hast borne and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted; nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love, &c. to the church of Pergamos, &c. and the church of Thyatira, &c.-See Rev. ii. 3, 4. 12-15. 18-20.
SECT. III. God will punish or correct the righteous for Sin.
GOD was wrath with Moses for his sin, and would not suffer him to go into the good land. Deut. iii. 25— 27. iv. 21, 22.
God said to Moses, Die in the mount, as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor: because ye trespassed against me among the children of Is rael, &c. Because ye sanctified me not in the eyes of the children of Is rael, &c. Because ye believed me not, &c.-Deut. xxxii. 48. 50, 51. Ps. cvi. 32, 33. Numb. xx. 12.
Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, he shall not enter into the land, &c. because ye rebelled against my word, &c.-Numb. xx. 24.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; but my mercy shall not depart away from him.2 Sam. vii. 14, 15.
God punished Solomon for his sin in his old age.-1 Kings xi.
David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord; and Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin, thou shalt not die; howbeit, because by this deed thou
hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child shall surely die.-2 Sam. xii. 13, 14.
Hezekiah sinned, and there was
wrath upon him.-2 Chron. xxxii. 25. THE PRIVILEGES of the rigHTEOUS, 2 Kings xx. 12, &c..
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments, &c. Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. -Ps. lxxxix. 30-32.

The man of God for his disobe dience was slain. -- 1 Kings xiii. 18, &c.
Thon wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.-Ps. xcix. 8. :
Christ withdrew himself from his Spouse, when she grew sluggish and mindless of him.-Cant. v. 1, &c.
For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wrath and smote him: I hid me, and was wrath: and he went on frowardly (or turning away) in the way of his heart: I have seen his ways, and I will heal him.-Isa. lvii. 17, 18.
When God sent Jonah to Nineveh, he fled from God's presence, &c. but the Lord sent out a great wind, &c. And Jonah was cast into the sea for this.-Jonah i. 1. 4. 10-12. 15.
Zacharias was struck dumb for not believing.-Luke i. 18-20,
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep, &c. When we are judged, we are chasten ed of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.-1 Cor. xi. 30, 31.

THE Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering, &c. If thou dost well, shalt thou not be accepted?-Gen. iv. 4. 7.
God said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I am about to do? &c. The cry of Sodom, &c. is great, &c. Abraham interceded with God for Sodom, and God granted him as much as he asked.-See at large, Gen. xviii. 17, 18. 20. 23, &c.
When God had sent his angels to destroy Sodom, they said unto Lot, Hast thou any here besides? son-inlaw, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring out of this place, &c. They hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here, lest thou be consumed, And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful unto him, and they brought
When Laban was pursuing Jacob, God came to Laban, &c. and said, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad (or from good to bad,) &c. Laban said, It is in the power of my hand to do but the God of your father spake unto you me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed, &c.-Gen. xxxi. 24. 29.
Jacob prevailed with God, &c. have seen God face to face. xxxii. 28.30.
When Jacob and his family were journeying, the terror of God was upon the cities round about them; and God appeared unto Jacob again, and blessed him, &c.-Gen. xxxv. 5. 9. 13.
The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man, &c. and his master saw that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand, &c. The Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Jo seph's sake, &c. The Lord was with Joseph, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper, &c. When Jo seph had the custody of the prisoners, that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper. Gen. xxxix. 2, 3. 5. 21-23.
As for you, ye thought evil against Joseph said unto his brethren, &c. me, but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass as it is this day, &c.Gen. 1. 19, 20...
of the Egyptians, and Pharaoh's sergave Israel favour in the sight be a great cry throughout all the land vants: and Moses, &c. There shall of Egypt, such as there was none like it, &c. But against any of the chilhis tongue, against man or beast; dren of Israel shall not a dog move that ye may know how that the Lord Egyptians and Israel-Exod. xi. 3. doth put a difference between the 6, 7.
Egypt this night, and will smite all I will pass through the land of the first-born, &c. and the blood shall be to you for a token, &c. When I and the plague shall not be upon you see the blood, I will pass over you, to destroy you, &c.-Exod. xii. 12, 13.

My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house with him will I speak mouth to mouth; even apparently, and not in dark speeches and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold, Numb. xii. 7,8.

The Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake; because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.-1 Sam. xii. 22. God answered David, when he in his distress had inquired of him.

I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, &c. Notwithstanding, in thy days, I will not do it, for David thy father's sake, &c. I will give one tribe to thy son, for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, which I have chosen.-1 Kings xi. 11-13. xv. 4.
He only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel.-1 Kings xiv. 13.
The prophet Elijah was taken up into heaven.-2 Kings ii. 12.
When the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went together, and wanted water, Elisha the prophet said, &c. Were it not that
regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. But now, &c.-2 Kings iii. 6, 7. 9, 10. 14, &c.
God hearkened to Hezekiah, and gave him a sign that God would heal him: he brought the shadow ten degrees backward.→2 Kings xx. 9, 10. Isa. xxxviii. 7, 8.
Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, &c.-Job viii. 20.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, &c. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth it shall prosper.-Ps. i. 1. 3.
Know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself.-Ps. iv. 3.
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation, &c.-Ps. xxii. 30.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters.-Ps. xxiii. 1, 2.
All the paths of the Lord are good
