This is the only Work professing to be a Guide to Candidates for Appointments in any Department of the Home and Indian Civil Services, which gives in full the Examination Papers used by the Commissioners. PREFACE. FEW subjects have of late more fully attracted the attention of all classes of young men in this country, than the Examination of Candidates for situations in the various Civil Departments of the State, conducted under the superintendence of Commissioners appointed by her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen. The Author, satisfied of this, has conceived that it would be very convenient to those persons who contemplate entering into the Public Service, to be correctly informed as to the Rules and Regulations which are prescribed for the various Departments. With a sincere desire, therefore, on the part of the Author, to meet the exigences of the case, he has ventured to offer to the public the following work. In order to render the publication as complete as possible, copious specimens of Examination Papers have been given. The Author ventures to say that the work will be found to contain all the information necessary to enable candidates, of whatever grade, to prepare themselves for Examination before the Commissioners; at the same time, he has never lost sight of the indispensable requisites in such a work,-accuracy of statement, and facility of reference. In the preliminary part of the work will be found a Table of the Limits of Age prescribed for Admission to the various Civil Departments.
