Lazarus Raised From Death

BY PETER PAUL RUBENS, THE FLEMISH MASTER, FROM

THE BERLIN MUSEUM.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go."-John, 11, 44.

WR

HILE Jesus was thus teaching east of Jordan there came to Him a message from the little village of Bethany close by Jerusalem. There lived the family of His friends, the two women, Mary and Martha, and their brother who was named Lazarus, though he is wholly unconnected with the poor Lazarus of the parable. The sisters sent word entreating Jesus to come to them in haste to save their brother; he was dying. The Master must have already resolved to make of this a last striking display of His power over death; for He made no haste in answering the summons. When nearly four days later He approached Bethany, first Martha and then Mary met Him with lamentations; Lazarus was dead. Martha was even reproachful. Why, she asked, had not Jesus hurried, and saved His friend?

The Master bade them lead Him to the grave in which Lazarus was laid. A multitude accompanied them, weeping; and Jesus also wept for the sorrow of the others. Now Lazarus had been dead four days; his grave was a cave covered by a huge stone. Jesus bade them lift this stone aside; then He called aloud, "Lazarus, come forth." And Lazarus came, in the shroud wherein he had been buried, his spirit summoned back after four days in the beyond.

JOHN XVIII THE BETRAYAL

1691

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovest me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Chapter 18

1 Judas betrayeth Jesus. 6 The officers fall to the ground. 10 Peter smiteth off Malchus' ear. 12 Jesus is taken, and led unto Annas and Caiaphas. 15 Peter's denial. 19 Jesus examined before Caiaphas. 28 His arraignment before Pilate. 36 His kingdom. 40 The Jews ask Barabbas to be let loose.

HEN Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? Jesus of Nazareth.

And they said,

8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
