SECTION XIV.

JESUS ANSWERS THE PHARISEES, WHO DEMANDED A SIGN AND THEN CONCLUDES HIS FORMER DISCOURSE.

No. 85, Capernaum.

MATTHEW xii. 38-45.

38 Then certain of-the scribes and of-the-Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we-would see a-sign 39 from thee. But he answered and-said unto-them, An-evil and adulterous generation seekethafter a-sign; and there-shall-no sign be-given to-it, but the sign 40 of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall-the Son of-man be three days and three nights in the 41 heart of-the earth. The-men ofNineveh shall-rise in judgement (T KOLE) with this generation, and shall-condemn it: because they-repented at the preaching of-Jonas; and, behold, a-greater 42 (Tλεov) than-Jonas is here. Thequeen of the south shall-rise-up in the judgement with this generation, and shall-condemn it: for

she-came from the uttermostparts (Tepar) of-the earth tohear the wisdom of-Solomon; and, behold, a-greater (λεov) than-Solomon is here.

When the unclean spirit is- 43 gone-out of a man, he-walketh through dry (avvdpwv) places, seeking rest, (avanavov) and findeth none. Then he-saith, I- 44 will-return into my house fromwhence I-came-out; and whenhe-is-come, he-findeth it empty, (oxoλasovтa) swept, and garnished. (KEKOOμnuevov.) Then go- 45 eth-he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more-wicked than-himself, and they-enter-in and-dwell there: and the last (ra εoxara) state of-that man is worse than-the first. Even-so shall-it-be also unto-this wicked generation.

Then one said unto-him, Behold, thy mother & thy brethren stand without,

desiring to-speak with-thee.
But he answered and-said
unto-him that-told him,
Who is my mother?

and who are my brethren? 49 And he-stretched-forth his hand toward his disciples, and-said, Behold my mother & my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall-do the will of-my Father which is in heaven, the-same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

THE DISCIPLES,(1) ENQUIRING WHY HE WAS TEACHING IN PARABLES;

MATT. xiii. 10-17, 24-35.

And the disciples came, and-said unto-him, Why speakest-thou unto-them in parables? 11 He answered and-said unto-them, Because itis-given unto-you to-know the mysteries of-the kingdom of-heaven, but to-them it-is-not 12 given. For whosoever hath, to-him shall-begiven, and he-shall-have-more-abundance: (TεpioσEvenσεTα) but whosoever hath not, from him shall-be-taken-away even that he13 hath. Therefore speak-I to-them in parables because they-seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do-they-un14 derstand. And in (') them is-fulfilled (avanλnpovra) the prophecy of-Esaias, which saith, By-hearing (akon) ye-shall-hear, and shall-not understand; and seeing ye-shall15 see, and shall-not perceive: for this people's heart is-waxed-gross, and their ears aredull of-hearing, (woi Bapews nкovσav) and

But blessed are your eyes, for they-see: and your 17 ears, for they-hear. For verily I-say untoyou, That many prophets and righteous men have-desired (ETEOvμnoav) to-see those things which ye-see, and have-not seen them; and to-hear those things which ye-hear, and havenot heard them. (ch. xii. 18, § IV.)

(ch. xiii. 18-23, § XVIII.)

24 Another parable put-he-forth unto-them, saying, The kingdom of-heaven is-likened unto-a-man which-sowed good seed in his 25 field: but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and 26 went-his-way. But when the blade wassprung-up, and brought-forth fruit, then ap27 peared the tares also. So the servants of-the householder came and-said unto-him, Sir, didst-not thou-sow good seed in thy field? 28 from-whence then hath-it tares? He said unto-them, An-enemy hath-done this. The

servants said unto-him, Wilt-thou then that we-go and-gather them-up? But he said, Nay; lest while-ye-gather-up the tares, ye30 root-up also the wheat with them.

Let

both grow-together until the harvest: and in the time of-harvest I-will-say to-the reapers, Gather-ye-together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them : but gather the wheat into my barn.

(ch. iv. 25, § xviii.) And he-said, So is the kingdom 26 of-God, as if a-man should-cast seed into the ground; and 27 should-sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should-spring and grow-up, (unкvvηrai) he knoweth not how.
