LUKE v.

But the-days will-come, when 35 the bridegroom shall-be-taken-away from them, and-then shallthey-fast in those days.

And he-spake also a-parable 36
unto them;

(4) No-man putteth (εßaε)
a-piece* of-a-new garment
(ἱματιου καινου)

upon an old, if otherwise,

then-both the new maketh-a-rent, and the-piece that was taken outof the new agreeth (ovμowva) not with-the old.

And no-man putteth new wine 37 into old bottles: else the new wine will-burst the bottles, and be-spilled, and the bottles shall-perish. But new wine 38 must-be-put into new bottles; and both are-preserved. No-man also having-drunk old 39 wine straightway desireth new: for he-saith, the old is better.

With these facts, hitherto considered, the Gospel accounts of the first year of our Saviour's Ministry are brought to a close. Diss. viii. 282, Vol. II.

ON THE APPROACH OF THE SECOND PASSOVER,(1) JESUS GOES UP TO JERUSALEM: HE HEALS A SICK MAN AT THE POOL OF BETHESDA, ON A SABBATH DAY; FOR WHICH SUPPOSED BREACH OF THE SABBATH, THE JEWS THENCEFORWARD GO ABOUT TO KILL HIM. DISCOURSE OF JESUS IN DEFENCE OF WHAT HE HAD DONE.

AFTER this there-was a-feast of-the Jews; and Jesus went-up 2 to Jerusalem. Now there-is at Jerusalem by the sheep-market (προβατική) a-pool (κολυμβήθρα) which is-called in-the-Hebrewtongue Bethesda, having five por3 ches. (oroas.) In these lay a-great multitude of-impotent folk, (ao0evovvτwv) of-blind, halt, withered, (now) waiting-for the moving 4 (Kivnov) of-the water. For an-angel went-down at a-certain-season (KATα KaрOV) into the pool, and troubled (erapaσos) the water: whosoever then first after the troubling (rapaxηv) of-the water stepped-in was-made whole of whatsoever disease he had. (Kara5 χετο.) And a-certain man was there, which-had an infirmity 6 thirty-and-eight years. WhenJesus saw him lie, and knew that he-had-been now a-long time in

that case, he-saith unto-him, Wilt-
thou (Oɛλ) be-made whole? The 7
impotent man answered him, Sir,
I-have no man, when the water is-
troubled, (ταραχθη) to put (βαλλη)
me into the pool: but while I am-
coming, another steppeth-down
before me. Jesus saith unto-him,
Rise, take-up thy bed, and walk.

made whole, and took-up his bed,
and walked: and on the same

cured, It-is the-sabbath-day: it-is
not-lawful for-thee to-carry thy
bed. He answered them, He 11

said unto-me, Take-up thy bed,

What-man is that which said

place.

Afterward (uera Tavтa) Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto-him, Behold, thou-artmade whole: sin no-more,(unker) lest a worse (x&pov) thing come 15 unto-thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it-was Jesus, which had-made him whole. 16 And therefore did-the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to-slay him, because he-had-done these17 things on the-sabbath-day. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, (εwc apri) and 18 I work. Therefore the Jews sought the-more to-kill him, because he-not only had-broken(eλve) the sabbath, but said also that God was his (otov ελeye) Father, making himself equal with-God. Then answered Jesus and said unto-them, Verily, verily, I-say unto-you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he-seeth the Father do: for what-things-soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son 20 likewise. (opos.) For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all-things that himself doeth: and he-will-shew him greater works than-these, that ye may-marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth-up the dead, and quickeneth (woo) them; even so the Son quickeneth 22 whom he-will. For the Father judgeth (kova) no-man, but hathcommitted all judgement (кpiσiv) 23 unto-the Son: that all men shouldhonour the Son, even-as they-honour the Father. He that-honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath - sent him. 24 Verily, verily, I-say unto-you, He that-heareth my word, and believeth on-him that-sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall-not

If I bear-witness of myself, my 31 witness is not true. There-is an- 32 other that beareth-witness of me; and I-know that the witness which he-witnesseth of me is true. Ye 33 sent unto John, and he-bare-witness unto-the truth. But I receive 34 not testimony from man: but these-things I-say, that ye mightbe-saved. He was a burning and 35 a shining light: and ye were-willing for a-season (poc pay) torejoice in his light. But I have 36 greater witness than-that of-John: for the works which the Father hath-given me to finish, (iva rɛɛwow) the same works that I do, bear-witness of me, that the Father hath-sent me. And the Fa- 37 ther himself, which-hath-sent me,
