Mark i. 40, § xxv. Luke v. 1, § xxiv, p. 2.

MATT. vi.

45 that ye-may-be the-children of your Father which is in heaven: for he-maketh his sun-to-rise on the-evil and on the-good, and sendeth-rain on the-just and on 46 the-unjust. For if ye-love them which-love you, what reward have-ye? do not even the publi47 cans the same? And if ye-salute your brethren only, what do-ye more (Teploσov) than others? do 48 not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, (TEλε0) even -as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

1

TAKE-heed that-ye-do not your alms before men, to be-seen (0ɛaOnvai) of-them: otherwise ye-have no reward of your Father which 2 is in heaven. Therefore when thou-doest thine alms, do-not sound-a-trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that theymay-have-glory of men. Verily I-say unto-you, They-have (are3 xovo) their reward. But whenthou doest alms, let-not thy lefthand know what thy right-hand 4 doeth: that thine alms may-be in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall-reward thee openly.

5

And when thou-prayest, thoushalt-not be as the hypocrites are: for they-love to-pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of-the streets, that they-may-beseen of-men. Verily I-say untoyou, They-have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou-prayest, enter into thy closet, and when-thou -hast-shut thy door, pray to-thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret 7 shall-reward thee openly. But when-ye-pray, use not-vain-repetitions, (Barro oynonre) as the heathen do for they-think that they

shall-be-heard (εlakovo@noovтai) for their much-speaking. (Ev T Toλvλoyiq.) Be-not-ye therefore 8 like unto-them: for your Father knoweth what-things ye - have need-of, before ye ask him. After this-manner therefore pray 9 ye. Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed-be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will 10 be-done in earth, as it is in hea

ven.

Give us this-day our daily 11 (TOV ETLOVOLOV)bread. And forgive 12 us our debts, (αφες τα οφειλήματα) as we forgive our debtors. And 13 lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (аπо Tоν TOvnpov.) For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. (ε Tove aшvac.) Amen. For 14 if ye-forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will-also forgive you: but if ye-forgive not 15 men their trespasses, neither willyour Father forgive your trespasses.

But 17

Moreover when ye-fast, be-not, 16 as the hypocrites, of-a-sad-countenance, (okveрwo) for they-disfigure (apavizovo) their faces, that they-may-appear unto-men to-fast. Verily I-say unto-you, They-have their reward. thou, when-thou-fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou-appear not unto-men 18 to-fast, but unto-thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall-reward thee openly.

Lay not-up for-yourselves trea- 19 sures upon earth, where moth and rust doth-corrupt, (apavizei) and where thieves break-through and steal: but lay-up for-your- 20 selves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth-corrupt, and where thieves do-not break-through nor steal: for 21

where your treasure is, there will22 your heart be also. The light (Avxvoc) of-the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, (anλovs) thy whole body shall-be 23 full-of-light. (pwrεvov.) But if thine eye be evil, (πovnρoç) thy whole body shall-be full-of-darkness. (σKOTELOV.) If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, 24 how-great is that darkness! Noman can serve two masters: for either he-will-hate the one, and love the other; or-else he-willhold-to the-one, and despise the other. Ye-cannot serve God and 25 mammon. Therefore (dia TOUTO) I-say unto-you, Take no-thought for-your life, what ye-shall-eat, or what ye-shall-drink; nor-yet foryour body, what ye-shall-put-on. Is not the life more than-meat, 26 and the body than-raiment? Behold (Euẞeare) the fowls of-the air, (ovpavov) for they-sow not, neither do-they-reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are-ye not much better (diapeρETE) than-they? 27 Which of you by-taking-thought can add one cubit unto his sta28 ture? And why take-ye-thought for raiment? Consider (karauaOɛTE) the lilies of-the field, how they-grow; they-toil not, neither 29 do-they-spin: and-yet, I-say unto -you, That even Solomon in all his glory was-not arrayed like one 30 of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which -to-day is, and to-morrow is-cast into the-oven, shall he not much 31 more clothe you, O-ye-of-littlefaith? Therefore take no-thought, saying, What shall-we-eat? or, What shall-we-drink? or, Where32 withal shall-we-be-clothed? (For after-all these-things do-the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly

Father knoweth that ye-haveneed of-all these-things. But 33 seek-ye first the kingdom of-God, and his righteousness; and all these-things shall-be-added untoyou. Take therefore no-thought 34 for the morrow: for the morrow shall-take-thought for-the-things of itself. Sufficient unto-the day is the evil thereof.

JUDGE not, that ye-be-not 1 judged. For with what judge- 2 ment ye-judge, ye-shall-be-judged: and with what measure yemete, it-shall-be-measured to-youagain. And why beholdest-thou 3 the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest (karavotic) not the beam that is in thine-own eye? Or how wilt-thou-say to- 4 thy brother, Let me-pull-out (apec Exẞaλw) the mote out-of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine-own eye? Thou-hypocrite, 5 first cast-out the beam out-of thine-own eye; and then shaltthou-see-clearly (diaßleeg) tocast-out the mote out-of thy brother's eye.

Give not that which-is-holy 6 unto-the dogs, neither cast-ye your pearls before swine, lest they-trample them under their feet, and turn-again and-rend you.

Ask, and it-shall-be-given you; 7 seek, and ye-shall-find; knock, and it-shall-be-opened unto-you : For every-one that-asketh receiv- 8 eth; and he that-seeketh findeth; and to-him that-knocketh it-shallbe-opened. Or what man is-there 9 of you, whom if his son ask bread, will-he-give him a-stone? Or if 10 he-ask a-fish, will-he-give him aserpent? If ye then, being evil, 11 (ovnoo) know how to-give good gifts unto-your children, howmuch more shall-your Father

which is in heaven give good things to-them that-ask him?

Therefore all-things whatsoever ye-would that men shoulddo to-you, do-ye even-so to-them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Enter-ye-in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad (Evpvxwpoc) is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many 14 there-be which go-in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow (TεOμμεvn) is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few therebe that find it.

Beware of (700σEXETE año)falseprophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly 16 they-are ravening wolves. Yeshall-know them by their fruits. Do-men-gather grapes of thorns, 17 or figs of thistles? Even-so every good tree bringeth-forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth18 forth evil fruit. A-good tree cannot bring-forth evil fruit, neither can a-corrupt_tree bring forth 19 good fruit. Every tree thatbringeth not-forth good fruit ishewn-down, and cast into the20 fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye-shall know them.

Not every-one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall-enter into the kingdom of-heaven; but he that-doeth the will of-my Father 22 which is in heaven. Many will

say to-me in that day, Lord, Lord, have-we-not prophesied in-thy name? and in-thy name havecast-out devils? and in-thy name done many wonderful-works? (dvvapes.) And then will-I-profess 23 unto-them, I-never knew you: depart from me, ye-that work iniquity.

Therefore whosoever heareth 24 these sayings of-mine, and doeth them, I-will-liken him unto-awise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain de- 25 scended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it-fell not: for itwas-founded upon a rock. And 26 every-one that heareth these sayings of-mine, and doeth them not, shall-be-likened unto- a - foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descend- 27 ed, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat-upon that house; and it-fell: and great was the fall of-it.

And it-came-to-pass, when Je- 28 sus had-ended (ovvɛtɛλɛσɛv) these sayings, the people were-astonished at his doctrine: For he- 29 taught them as one having authority, (εovolav) and not as the scribes.

WHEN-he was-come-down 1 from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

SECTION XXIV.

JESUS TEACHES THE PEOPLE FROM THE LAKE OF CAPERNAUM: SIMON PETER, AND HIS PARTNERS, HAVING LET DOWN THEIR NETS AT HIS COMMAND, ENCLOSE A WONDERFUL DRAUGHT OF FISHES.(1)

No. 59. Luke of Gennesaret.

LUKE v. 1-11.

AND it-came-to-pass, that-as the people pressed-upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by 2 the lake of-Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were-gone-out of them, and-were-washing their 3 nets. And he-entered into one ofthe ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that-he-would-thrustout a little from the land. And he-sat-down, and-taught the people out-of the ship.

inclosed a-great multitude offishes: and their net brake. And 7 they-beckoned unto-their-partners, which were in the other ship, that they-should-come and-help them. And they-came, and filled both the ships, so-that they began-tosink. When-Simon Peter saw it, 8 he-fell-down at-Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I-am-a sinful man, O-Lord. For he was 9 astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of-the fishes which they-had-taken and so 10 was also James, and John, thesons of-Zebedee, which were partners with-Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou-shalt catch (εon wypwv) men. And when-they- 11 had-brought their ships to land, they-forsook all, and-followed him.(2)
