Luke ix 18, § VIII. John vii. 1. § XII. HARMONY OF THE GOSPELS, PART FOURTH. SECTION I. JESUS DEFENDS HIS DISCIPLES AGAINST THE COMPLAINTS OF THE PHARISEES,(1) THAT THEY DID NOT OBSERVE THE TRADITION OF THE ELDERS, IN WASHING THEIR HANDS BEFORE THEY ATE BREAD.(2) 1 MATT.xv. 1-20. No. 116. Capernaum. (ch. xiv. § xxx. p. 3.) THEN came-to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, MARK vii. 1-5, 9-13, 6-8, 14-23 (ch. vi. § xxx. p. 3.) THEN came-together unto him 1 the Pharisees, and certain of-the scribes, which-came from Jerusalem. And when-they-saw some of- 2 his disciples eat bread with-defiled, (Kovais) that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they-found-fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, 3 except they-wash their hands oft, (πυγμη) eat not, holding (κρατουνTEC) the tradition of-the elders. And when they come from the-mar- 4 ket, except they-wash, (BarrowTai) they-eat not. And many other things there-be, which they-havereceived to-hold, as the-washing ofcups, and pots, brazen-vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes 5 asked him, why walk not thy disciples accordingto the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with-unwashen hands? (1) Diss. viii. part 4, p.320, Vol. II. K Ye hypocrites, well did-Esaias prophesy of you, 8 saying, This people draweth-nigh unto-me with-their mouth, & honoureth me with-their-lips; but their heart is far (πορρω аTEXε) from me. But in-vain they-do-worship me, teaching for doctrines the-commandments of-men. 9 MARK vii. And he-said unto-them, Full-well 9 Honour thy father and thy mother; die the-death:* 10 but ye say, if a-man shall-say 11 to-his-father or mother, It is Corban, that is by-whatsoever thou-mightest- he shall be free. And ye-suffer him no-more to-do 12 ought for-his father or his mother; making-the word of-God of-none- 13 effect (akvρovvTES) through-your tradition, which ye-have-delivered and many such like-things (παρόμοια) do-ye. He answered and-said unto-them, 6 well hath-Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it-is-written, this people honoureth me with-their-lips, but their heart is far* from me. Howbeit in-vain do-they-worship 7 me, teaching for doctrines the-commandments of-men. For laying-aside(apevres) the com- 8 mandment of-God, ye-hold (paTEITE) the tradition of-men, as thewashing (Barrioμove) of-pots and cups: and many other such likethings ye-do.
