It appears desirable that a preface to a work of this nature should contain a few brief, explanatory observations upon its general design and tendency: although it is not an easy task for any one so to refer to his own compositions as to escape the imputation either of vanity or assumed humility. But the author will venture to observe that in the choice of his subjects he has aimed at variety and comprehensiveness; though he is fearful that in not a few instances he may have failed of attaining either.
