PREFACE.

MR.

R. GREGORY'S beautiful and affectionate Memoir, which is here republished from the February, March and April numbers of the WesleyanMethodist Magazine of 1881, together with the kindly and excellent memorials of Dr. Osborn and Dr. Pope, would most fully satisfy my desire as it regards a written monument of my dear husband, were it not for one conviction. Commendatory sentences are all gratifying, especially to those who are left to mourn for the departed one; but if he were a minister of Christ, taking an active and busy share in the affairs of Christ's Church, Christian people who knew him outwardly will have a strong wish to know him inwardly; to know his true spiritual character. "The shell is admirable,' they will think, 'but what was the kernel? We want to look, if it be possible, into the inmost soul of the man, and learn how far he realised in his own daily experience the religion which he so fervently preached.'

The conviction that such a wish ought so far as possible to be gratified has led me to make a few extracts from my husband's journal, and to add a few feeble remarks of my own. Yet it is not without misgivings that I venture on this publication. For
