RECOMMENDATION.

It is a sensible pleasure to me that I have prevailed upon so worthy a man as my reverend and dear brother Mr. David Jennings, to transport the treasure of this excellent Life from America to Great Britain. I had enjoyed, indeed, a happy correspondence with the Reverend Dr. Cotton Mather, for near twenty years before his death, as well as with the Rev. Mr. Samuel Mather, his son, ever since. I found much of his learned and pious character very early, from the spirit of his letters, and by his public writings, which he favoured me with every year; yet this account of his heart and life being drawn up in so great a part of it by himself, hath highly increased my esteem and veneration for the memory of so valuable a person.

I was so charmed with it upon my first perusal, that I thought had never read a life of stricter piety, of warmer zeal for God, of greater diligence in duty, and more generous love to men, than appears in this book, and I am still of the same mind. My worthy friend
