hundred thirty-five cubits in breadth, and one hundred eighty-seven in length"."

The service of God performed by the Priests and Levites in the inner court consisted in offering sacrifices, burning the perfume on the golden altar, trimming the lamps on the golden candlestick, pronouncing the blessing recorded by Moses, and in singing the Lord's

song.

The priests' holy garments were of fine linen. The man clothed with white linen, with a writer's inkhorn by his side seen by Ezekiel, the promise of walking with Christ in white, and saints represented as clothed with white robes ', seem to refer to these holy garments.

The Priests' dress was linen breeches, and a linen coat, or surplice. This was girt to them with a long linen girdle, which went divers times about them, which helped to keep them warm in their thin clothing, and strengthen their backs in their hard service. Upon their heads they had a bonnet or mitre of linen.

every Sabbath day. On the left side was a table of gold, on which they set the old bread, when they fetched it out. The reason why they began with the marble table was, because they rose higher and higher in holy things, and went not lower and lower.

The High Priest had two suits to minister in, viz. his golden garments, and another dress of plain linen, in which he went into the Holiest of All, when on the great day of atonement, he entered within the vail with blood, which he sprinkled before the mercy-seat, and sweet incense which he burnt before the Lord, the smoke whereof ascended in a cloud between the cherubim of glory. Then, having offered a short prayer, he came out and lifted up his hands, and pronounced the benediction in the name of all the persons in the Godhead, and that according to their economical offices in the covenant of grace. The Holy of Holies was a type of the holy place of the HOLY The victim was to be slain without the vail before the High Priest could carry in the blood, sprinkle it towards the faces, and upon the propitiatory, and make the incense ascend in smoke. So Christ the true sacrifice offered himself up to death, and then entered into heaven itself, there to ap pear in the presence of God for us.

ONES.

The Singers, Musicians, and Trumpeters were clothed with linen ephods when in service.

I come, Fifthly, to give an account of the Musical Instruments made use of; and to shew when the Psalms were sung in the daily service.

These Musical Instruments were various. Some of them were made of silver, and some, it may be, were made of brass.

The instruments of Music made use of were Trumpets, Pipes, or Cornets, Harps, Psalteries; and Cymbals. These are called in scripture Instruments of music of the Lord, i. e. of the song of the Lord'. David appointed them to be continually used before the Ark'. He divided the Levites, who were musicians, into four-and-twenty courses". And they were by, or according to, their courses, to stand every morning to confess and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening.

Solomon, having finished the Temple, continued the order set by his father David; so that the Levites, Singers, and Musicians, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals, psalteries, and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and

twenty Priests sounding with trumpets. -And the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord. And they lift up their voice with the trumpets, and cymbals, and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. The trumpets were of silver. The original institution of them you have in the Book of Numbers, and also their use, with a command when they should be used. In the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginning of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets, over your burntofferings, and over the sacrifices of your peace-offerings, that they may be to you for a memorial before the Lord your God. I am the Lord your God.

The Pipes, or Cornets, were of cane. They were not constantly used at the Altar. They were only used twelve days throughout the whole year, namely, at the first and second Passover, on the first holy day of the Passover week, at Pentecost, and on each day of the Feast of Tabernacles.

The constant musical instruments in daily use were the Trumpets, Harps, Psalteries, and Cymbals.

instruments. The one was struck with a quill, or a bow; the other with the fingers. The cymbals were of brass. There was but one cymbal in the choir at once, and it seems to have been the bass.

The trumpets were sounded by the Priests every morning three times at the opening of the court gates. It sounded tarantantara. The morning sacrifice, which prefigured the Lamb of God, was offered at nine in the forenoon. It was accompanied with a meat offering, and a drink offering.

The pouring out the strong wine before the Lord was a MEMORIAL of Christ's pouring out his soul unto death; whose oblation of himself and his love to his Father and his church, prefigured by this wine as poured forth, or poured out, cheer the heart of God and man. On finishing the drink-offering the song of the Lord also began with the trumpets and instruments of music.

The trumpets sounded nine times. The instruments of music were played on. And vocal music was joined with the instrumental. The Psalms to be sung were fixed on.

The Presidents over the Singers and Music gave directions, and took the lead.

The Singers divided each Psalm to be sung into three parts, making three
