The Patient bearing of the Crofs enjoyn'd to the Disciples.

OUR Lord his Paffion to the Twelve declares,
And thus againft approaching Ills prepares.

---No golden Dreams of Pleasure entertain,
Vain Fantoms all, your flatt'ring Hopes are vain.
If you'd my Crown, you muft my Suff'rings share,
Who wou'd come after me his Cross must bear;
Altho' a shameful 'tis, and pond'rous Load,
And mark with Tracks of Blood the thorny Road,
Who e're his Mafter thus to own denies,
Who e're inglorious from the Combat flies;
Him will I juftly at the last great Day
Renounce, and fend to endless Flames away:
But him who boldly me confeffes here
When in my Father's Glory I appear,

}

Thron'd on his blissful Side the Angels near, Him there I'll own, my faithful Friends confefs'd, Before th' unnumber'd Hofts, and Myriads of the

Blefs'd.

25. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him fhall the Son of man be ashamed, when he fhall come in his own glory and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

The Traveller falling among Thieves.

A Captious Lawyer tempts our Lord in vain,

And asks the way eternal Bliss to gain.

What does the facred Page you teach contain,

Returns our Lord? To whom he thus rejoyn'd, We there are taught with Heart, and Soul, and

Mind,

With utmoft Strength and Thoughts, united.

Pow'r,

To love th' All-High, whom Earth and Heav'n adore,

Our Neighbour as ourself, there needs no more.
Our Lord again replies; obferve but this,
Thou canst not fail of everlafting Bliss.

He queftions ftill--- but who my Neighbour is ?
When Jefus thus, a Trav'ler once went down
To Jericho, from Salem's facred Town:
A hollow Vale between two Thickets lay,
Where ruthless Men, the fierceft Beafts of Prey
In Covert lurk'd, him there they feiz'd and bound,
And rifling left with many a ghaftly Wound,
(For small their Booty was) expiring on the
Ground.
