* These confonants fhould be named as fingle characters fo the pupils, thus, ch, fhould be named as tfh, in chance; ph as fih, in phyfic; fh as ifh, in wifh; th as ith, in with, and wh, being what are termed the whiftling letters, ought to be fo founded by the teacher, they would then catch their identical founds or names, and constantly adhere to them in future.

Note Ift, The vowels are feven in number, viz. aeiou wy, they are fo called because each of them makes a perfect found by itself.

u, has the nature of a diphthong, when the found is long, as in due, true.

y and w are confonants when they begin a word or fyllable, but in all other refpects they are vowels.

Note 2d, The confonants are nineteen in number, viz. bcdfghjklmnpqrft vx z, ten of which are called mutes, viz. b c d g j k p q t v, because they cannot make a perfect found by themselves without a vowel is joined to them; but thofe feven which are called femi-vowels, viz. fhim nr and s make an imperfect found without the help of a vowel. Four of these femi-vowels are called liquids, viz. I m n r, becaufe a mute and a liquid glide eafily off the tongue when united in the fame fyllable thus, dr, in drive, pl, in pleasant, &c.

Note 3d, x and z are generally called double confonants, and are both founded iz in the beginning of a word or fyllable, as xerxes, zealous.
