LESSON VII.

Conversation with the Woman at the Well.

CH. iv. 1-15.

1 When therefore the Lord knew how I the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3 He left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must needs go through Sa

maria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am 2 woman of Samaria? for the Jews

have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

In the last lesson, we learned that Jesus was the messenger of God.

What did he declare those who believed on him have?

What awfully solemn declaration did he make concerning such as do not believe on him? WHAT did the Lord know that the Pharisees had heard?

[ocr errors]

Had John, before this, baptized many persons?
- Matt. 3: 5, 6.

Do you
think these Pharisees were pleased,
that so many people received this new doc-

trine preached by Jesus, and came to him for
baptism?

Did Jesus think the Pharisees taught the truth?
Matt. 15: 14.

2 DID Jesus himself baptize any persons?
What is said in Chap. 3: 22, 26 ?

Have you not heard people speak of a man's building a house, when they only meant that he directed it to be built by others?

3 WHAT did Jesus do?

Where was he at this time?— Chap. 2: 13. What country was between Judea and Galilee ? 4 WHAT Country must he pass through to get into Galilee ?

5 To what city did he come?

6

Near what mountain was this place? See map. What was this city called a great many years before? Gen. 33: 18.

What is it called in Acts 7: 16?

To whom was a parcel of ground, near this city, given?

Where do you find an account of this? Gen. 48: 21, 22.

Will you relate the particulars?

WHAT was there in this place?
What did he do to rest him?

About what time of day was this?

7 WHAT other person came to the well?

Of what country was she?

What did Jesus ask of her?

8 WHERE were the disciples ?

For what purpose

?

Do you think meat here means food of any kind? 9 WHAT did the woman say to Jesus?

Did the proud Pharisees consider it lawful for
Jews to associate with any other people ?-

Acts 10: 28.

Did she expect any attention from Jesus?

10 THEN What did he say to the woman? Is not a knowledge of God and Jesus Christ as necessary to the eternal life of the soul, as water is for the life of the body?

Under what figure did Jesus refer to heavenly blessings?

What do you think Jesus meant, by living water?

11 DID she understand what he meant ?

What did she say to him?

By this, should you not think she expected he would draw water from this well?

12 WHAT did she ask him?

13 How did Jesus reply to her question?

14 WHAT did he say of those who drank of the water (i. e., who received the instructions), which he would give?

Are men who have studied a great while, and learned a great many things, pleased with the little picture books of children?

Should you suppose those who receive the instructions of God's Word, and expect to go to heaven, would very much thirst for, or desire, the things of this world?

Will not the child who loves God with all his heart, and always obeys him, have eternal life?-Chap. 3: 16.

What does this verse mean?

15 THEN What did the woman say to Jesus? Do you think she understood fully what Jesus meant by what he had said?

Does sin blind the mind in regard to spiritual
things?-2 Cor. 4: 4.

If those who receive the instructions of Jesus,
and obey his precepts, are to be so favored,
will you not carefully consider them?
What effect has the instruction which you have
already received, had on you?

LESSON VIII.

Conversation with the Samaritan Woman con

tinued.

CH. iv. 16- 34.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband in that saidst thou truly. 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31 T In the meanwhile his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said his disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat?

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

To what did Jesus compare his instructions in his conversation with the woman at the well? Though she did not fully comprehend his meaning, what effect was produced on her mind? 16 WHAT did Jesus direct the woman to do? 17 WHAT did the woman say?

What was the reply of Jesus to her?

What did he mean by Thou hast well said? Do you think it well to confess your faults? 18 JESUS sought to make upon her a deep impression of his knowledge of her heart; how did he do it?

How many husbands had this woman had? Was it right for her to live with a man as her husband, who was not such?

Which of the commandments was she violat-
ing? — Exod. 20 : 14.

Do you not think she was surprised, to find
Jesus knew all her conduct?

Does he know yours as well as he did hers?—
Ps. 139: 1, 2, 3.

19 WHAT did the woman then say she perceived? Why do you think she called him a prophet? Do men, when they prophesy, or tell what will take place in future, know any thing which God does not communicate to them?

20 SHE endeavors to turn his mind to something else what did she say?

What mountain was this?

Where did the Jews say was the place to wor-
ship?

Did the Jews come up to Jerusalem every
year?
Deut. 12: 5, 6.

Is it probable that all the Jews, who came up
to Jerusalem, really worshipped God in their

hearts ?

21 THE woman had professed to believe Jesus was a prophet; ought she not, then, to have believed what he said?

What did he say to her?

Which is the most important in religious worship; the place where, or the manner in which we worship?

Has not the time now come, when people do not feel obliged to go to any particular city or town to worship God?

22 DID the Samaritans understand the true object of worship?

Did the Jews possess more knowledge of God than the Samaritans ?
