bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30 He must increase, but I must de

стване.

31 He that cometh from above, is above all: he that is of the earth, is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven, is above all.

32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33 He that hath received his testimony
hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 For he whom God hath sent, speak-
eth the words of God: for God giveth
not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loveth the Son, and
hath given all things into his hand.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath
everlasting life and he that believeth
not the Son shall not see life; but the,
wrath of God abideth on him.

WHAT did you tell me, in the last lesson, Jesus
Isaid to Nicodemus ?

Well, is there as much need of your being
changed in heart as there was of Nicodemus?
Have you thought much about God's great love
to the world?

Have you considered, too, how you would feel, to be driven away from God and all your good friends for ever?

17 FOR what purpose did God not send his Son into the world?

Would it not have been just, if he had sent him to destroy all men, as they were destroyed by the flood?

But for what did he send his Son?

From what will those who believe be saved? Do you think any who hear of Christ, and do not believe on him will be saved?-Mark 16:16. 18 WHO are not condemned ?

Who are already, or now, under sentence of
condemnation ?

Can any escape the execution of this sentence?
Why are they now condemned ?

Do any but such as obey and love the Savior
really believe on him?

19 WHAT is the occasion of their condemnation ? Do the privileges which men enjoy increase the guilt of disobedience? - Matt. 11: 21. Which is most guilty, the child who does what he knows is wrong, or one who does the same thing, not knowing it to be wrong ?

If your father was to go away, and should leave directions for what he wished you to do while he was absent, would it be right for you to neglect to look at those directions?

Would not some self-willed children do so? Why do men prefer ignorance on the subject of religion?

Did the preaching of Jesus Christ search the hearts of the proud Pharisees and wicked men with the light of truth? - Matt. 23: 14. 20 WHAT do those who are guilty, hate?

Is it not a mark of guilt, when a child wishes to conceal actions from his parents?

When will God bring all concealed wickedness to light?

21 WHAT do such as act rightly and properly, do ? For what purpose?

When you do right, how do you feel about others knowing it?

Do you feel glad that God knows, and will remember all you do?

Where was Jesus at this time? 22 AFTER this where did Jesus go ? What did he do there?

23 WHERE was John baptizing?

On which bank of the Jordan was Enon? See тар.

What was the reason why John baptized at that place?

How, then, should you think he performed this ceremony?

What was required of such as presented themselves for baptism?- Matt. 3: 6-8.

24 HAD John been imprisoned?

Who was it that cast John into prison, soon after this? Matt. 14: 3.

[graphic]
[ocr errors]

Had he done any thing more than to tell him the truth?

25 ABOUT What did a question arise between some of John's disciples and the Jews?

Was purity of life required of those who were baptized?

May it not be, that purifying here, refers to the ceremony of baptism?

Of what is baptism an emblem ?

26 THEN John's disciples referred the subject to him.

What did they tell him about Jesus?

Did many persons come to Jesus, to be bap

tized?

At this time, did they think more of John than of Jesus?

27 WHAT did John say to them?

Can you ever obtain knowledge, or riches, without God's blessing?

How ought these, and all things to be used, then, if God gives them to us?

How should you feel, when others have more blessings or greater success than you ?

28 WHERE did John tell them this?-Chap. 1:

[graphic]

20.

29 WHAT does John say to illustrate his relation to Jesus?

Who should receive most attention at a marriage, the bridegroom's friends, or the bridegroom himself?

Then was it not proper, that the Savior of the world should receive more attention and honor than his friend?

How does the friend of the bridegroom feel, when he hears him rejoice, and sees that he is happy?

Did John feel glad, when he heard that Jesus baptized a great many persons?

Was this the feeling of his disciples ?

30 WHOSE disciples did John say would increase?

Had the prevalence of the gospel been foretold by prophets?

31 FROM whence did Jesus come?- Chap. 6: 38. What did John say of him?

Is Jesus Creator of all things.

Chap. 1: 3.

Well, then, does he know all things?

What places him above all as a Teacher ?

32 Or what things did Jesus speak?

Did a large portion of the Jewish people believe on Jesus?

33 WHAT have those who believe in Christ done? If a man left his friends and became the disci

ple of Jesus, would it not show that he believed what he said and taught?

If you were going to a certain place, and a friend should tell you it would be very dangerous to do so; then if you did not go, would it show that you believed what he had said was true?

What does set to his seal that God is true, mean?

Did those who heard Philip preach at Samaria
seal the truth of his declaration ?-Acts 8:12.
How did Stephen set his seal to the truth of the
word of God?

Will a person come to the Savior for pardon
until he believes the word of God is true?
By whom was Jesus sent?

84 WE

HOSE Words did Jesus speak?

Did Jesus know much more of God and heavenly things, than the ancient prophets?

35 How did God feel toward his Son Jesus Christ? What things are in his power?

36 WHAT has he who believeth on him?

What is it to have everlasting life? — Rev. 7: 15-17.

What is said of such persons as do not believe on the Son?

In what condition will all who are not admitted to heaven be?-Matt. S: 12. 13: 42. 25: 46. If Jesus suffered so much in the garden and on the cross, from God's displeasure against sin, will it not be awful to have his wrath abide on you for ever?

Will you repeat this last verse every morning and evening, this week?

REVIEW.

What important topic has been under consideration in the last three lessons?

Would you prefer to have seen the miracle of Cana, or to have heard the conversation with Nicodemus ?

Would you have asked him about your own heart?

Can you tell, whether Jesus was at Cana again? On what occasion afterward did Nicodemus manifest himself to Jesus?-7: 51.

If he were an open friend, what would he have done at such a time?

The subject about which he conversed was very important; what improper language did he use?

Jesus introduced the subject of Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness; what did he intimate in regard to himself in this connexion ?

For what did God send his Son into the world?
Are all men liable to be lost at this time?
How can any be delivered?

Will such as do not believe be saved?

16 16.

Mark

Will all men hear of a Savior? Isa. 11: 9.
