Why do you suppose they were so anxious to know who John was?

26 WHAT was John's answer to their question? Will you give some account of John's baptizing? Matt. 3: 6, 13, 16.

To whom did he refer, when he said one stood among them that they did not know?

27 WILL you look at v. 15? Do you not think this verse very much like that?

What do you suppose John thought of Christ, by his saying he was unworthy to untie his shoe?

28 WHERE did these things occur?

Which way was the river Jordan from Jerusalem?

Was Bethabara, then, on the east or west bank of the Jordan?

In what river did John baptize?

What would prepare you to be baptized?
Matt. 3: 6. Acts 2: 41.

LESSON III.

Christ makes his Appearance among the People to whom John was preaching.

CH. i. 29-51.

29 The next day, John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with

water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that

sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35 Again, the next day after, John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he waiked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What

seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, | (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, The Christ.

42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is, by interpretation, A stone.

43 T The day following, Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did

write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile !

48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me ? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the figtree, I saw thee.

49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

29 WHOм did John see the next day?

What did he say when he saw him approach? How does a lamb differ from a tiger in his disposition?

Which was Jesus like?

What did John say Christ did in regard to the sin of the world?

Did the Jews offer sacrifices for sin? - Lev. 4: 4. Can you repeat any passage which represents the death of Christ as a sacrifice for sin ?1 Pet. 2: 24.

Is not this another reason why Jesus is called the Lamb of God?

30 WHO did John say this was ? - -v. 15.

Why was Jesus preferred before John ?

31 THOUGH John had been acquainted with Jesus, did he before understand that he was the Messiah?

For what did John come baptizing, before he knew this?

When he was sent of God to baptize, was it in

the name of a Messiah to come, that he baptized ?

Then did this prepare those who heard him, to expect and receive him when he came ? 32 WHAT did John say he saw?

[ocr errors]

What had God promised John? —v. 33.

At what place and on what occasion did he see this?- Matt. 3: 16.

33 As Jesus had the form of a man, how was John told he should know that he was the Son of God?

With what was it said JESUS should baptize?
What took place when this was fulfilled? -
Acts 2:1- 4.

34 WHO did John tell the people this was?

Did this declaration convince John, that Jesus was the Son of God?

Do you often speak of Jesus?

35, 6 WHEN John saw him again, what did he say? 37 THEN what did two of John's disciples do? 38 WHEN Jesus saw them following what inquiry did he make?

What was their reply?

Was Rabbi a term of respect? what does it mean? 39 DID they go with the Savior?

Do you think, if you could go with him and
hear his instructions, you would obey them?
Do you in these lessons receive his instructions?
Does he know whether you obey them?

What time in the afternoon was the tenth hour? 40 WHAT was the name of one of these men ? Whose brother was he?

41 WHAT did Andrew do?

What did he tell his brother ?

Do you know the precise meaning of the terms Messiah and Christ ?-Malcom's Bible Dict. 42 For what purpose do you think Andrew brought his brother Simon to Christ?

Should not all children persuade others to go where they may learn something good?

Well, you are learning here what the Savior taught. Can you persuade some one else to come, as Andrew did his brother?

What did Jesus say Simon should be called? Are the Greek names Cephas and Peter the same? - Luke 6: 14.

43 WHERE did Jesus go the next day?

Which way is the country of Galilee from the city of Jerusalem ? — See map.

Who did he tell to follow him?

[ocr errors]

44 FROM what city were these three men who followed Jesus?

Where is Bethsaida?

45 WHO did Philip find to go with them? Whom did he tell Philip he had found?

Did the Savior ever say any thing was written concerning him in the Old Testament ?Chap. 5: 39.

Where was the city of Nazareth?

46 WHAT did Nathanael say to Philip?

What do you think was the general character of the people of Nazareth?

Ought you to judge of a child's character before you know him?

47 WHEN Jesus saw Nathanael what did he say ? Do you think he meant he was a very good man?

If the Savior should speak of you, could he truly say, see, here is a child, in whom there is no disposition to deceive his father or mother about any thing?

48 WHAT did Nathanael ask Jesus? What was his answer?

49 THEN What did Nathanael say?

Does King of Israel mean the same as Messiah?

50 WHAT did Jesus then say to Nathanael ? 51 WHAT did he promise the people that they should see?

What does the word verily mean.

Do you recollect what took place at the baptism of Jesus ? Matt. 3:16.

When he opened blind eyes, or raised the dead, did they not have stronger evidence than Nathanael had, that he was the Son of God? He calls himself the Son of man; was he hungry, and thirsty, and did he sleep like other men?-Matt. 25: 35, 36.

But did not his instructions and miracles prove him to be the Son of God, as those proved him to be a man?

Now this account which John has written is principally made up of the instructions of Jesus; ought you not to attend very carefully to them?

He was with God in heaven, but became a man on earth, to die, that you might be saved; will you think of this much before the next Sabbath?

REVIEW.

In the first lesson John several times uses the term Word; to whom is it applied?

Where is he now ?-Rom. 8: 34. and Matt. 28:20. What do these passages, taken in connexion, prove Jesus to be?

Where is it said, he made all things?
Where, that he is to be our Judge?

What was the object of John's preaching? Were many of the chief men among the Jews ready to receive Jesus?
